So there is not much mystery left. The only thing I managed to guess when I had the quick look was the use of MSB (also because I kind of expected them to use this well established technique. But to deduct the other parts of the definition, I'd probably have to go through the stepper / pen updown control routines first, which I assume you did and the thing became clear, right?
