If the drive (differences aside) is otherwise a Chinon F*-354 variant, 
the solution might just be simple. The disk presence / write protect 
sensing microswitches in these drives are infamously bad. Fortunately, 
they usually only need to be disassembled and the little brass contacts 
in the microswitches be cleaned from oxides.
