I really doubt they made more changes than they really had to. 8501 is a complete re-layout compared to 6502. 6510 is not HMOS yet, so likely much like 6502 (just the port added, and AEC -- a bit of extra space at the periphery). All transistors needed to be resizes for the HMOS conversion. It also obviously is now done with the help of some CAD instead of completely manually. But yes, most things look about the same.
