I believe there is a jumper in the 850/851 to turn on/off hard sector
detection, right?  You just have to set aside a day to work through all of
the jumpers and map the results when you make changes.  You can affect
every little thing.  Also, there are variations of the 850/851, be sure
you're looking at the right drive.

Or just find a 848
