I meant more in real user/real time use - you fire up your machine and as soon as you stick in a floppy (where detection is possible) it starts by caching the directory and then read ahead caching/write caching, slowing for compatibility if user actions generated a cache miss. This process would only be faster with more modern IEC devices. I admit it would just be an exercise in avoiding having to slow the accelerator down for storage IO compatibility, which might not really be a big deal (though I could see it being nice in extended use for something like GEOS), and a write cache could be dangerous for obvious reasons.
