Thank you; Levente did all those measurements.
After the issue was released, Levente also had a brilliant idea for
playing 6-bit digis at 16KHz on a stock machine, using PWM. The program
is on the C=Hacking webpage, at the very bottom (as an addendum to the
current issue), and is quite cool -- surely a C= first.
(Pretty cool how, almost 20 years after its release, useful new C= tricks
still appear :).

P.S. to Chris: George Taylor pops up every now and then (on IRC, maybe
on the newsgroup (which I don't read anymore)), but he disappeared a
year or two after you did. Maybe try a deja news search?
