I don't know if this will help you, but some time ago I coded an ASCII
text viewer for the C64 and the C16/C116/Plus/4. It was included in the
SIDWinder music editor package, and you'll find it here:

http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/c64/audio/editors/SIDwinder_V0123_src.zip.
The prog can view ASCII texts in 80x25 (using hires bitmap mode + a 4x8
pixels set).
