I use rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol), the active ingredient in most electronic solvents and cleaners. It's available in most drug stores and is very cheap. 70% is all right, but 91% is better. That's concentrated enough to remove all moisture as it evaporates. If the contacts are corroded, a SOFT pencil eraser will usually clean them. If that doesn't work, then use 1500 grit sandpaper.
