Violating a standard does not necessarily mean that it does not work.
;-)

I remember something like 10m or 15m as being the maximum allowed for
RS/EIA 232. More *can* work (and even does most often), but it is not
what the participating parts have to be able to handle. Do you remember
which datarate was used?

For 150m, RS422 (or RS485) should be a much better choice.
