Interesting! I got the same a while ago with my PL2303 based adaptor on my 
Asus eeePC 1000H with WinXP, with a freshly downloaded driver. I didn't 
have time to test further, though.

BTW, I still have a LOT of unassembled C2N232I devices. If someone is 
interested :) From time to time I still get requests for a C2N232 so slowly 
the stock gets reduced.
