I regularly use a 9V supply rated at 1.6A, and the C64 power supply.  This 
will run the VIC-20, a cartridge, and memory expansion.  I do, however, 
use a disk drive and not a tape recorder.

The 9V AC on the C64 power supply is fused at 3 A, and so is the VIC-20, 
so you can always use the C64 power supply.
