You can't sharpen the image using 24 bit color. It will only give you shades of gray and other faint colors. You need to set your scanner for black and white, and turn up the contrast. You then need to increase the brightness until the background drops out. This takes some experimentation to get a readable image. frequently this results in the scanner "seeing" the image on the back of the page.
