You're forgetting the p500, where there are similar inteactions with location $0/$1 between the 6509 and vicII as the c64 has with the 6510 and vicII. Plus if you make something work better than it does on a real 6509, then new software will likely exploit it (either on purpose or by accident) and you'll end up with compatibility issues.
