No, both a CF card and a FDC shows up as a few 8-bit registers, and
both is instructed to read or write individual sectors. Although the
command set and register mappings differ, the firmware changes to
support it should be rather small, especially if parts of each CF
sector is ignored (due to them being 512 byte sector while the firmware
might be written for smaller sector sizes). One big advantage of a CF
card in comparision to a FDC is that there are no timing constraints
forcing you to read/write fast enough.
