So that's the last version with white phosphor? There were so many variations including upgrades that I doubt there will ever be a 100% reliable history. For instance, I upgraded my first one with a kit that replaced the upper case half with the 'real' keyboard, the CRT and the bezel and label, but of course still the same serial no. (10705); I wonder if any were shipped from the factory in that configuration or whether the new keyboard appeared at the same time as the dynamic RAM 2001-N. m ----- Original Message ----- From: Santo Nucifora To: cbm-hackers_at_musoftware.de Sent: Thursday, November 07, 2019 9:54 PM Subject: Re: hi res pic of 2001-8 power supply smoothing cap wiring Bill's 2001-8 variation is the one most people usually think was the earliest model (or used to think so). This is 10051 with the Sanyo tape drive and the thick metal nameplate. It did go from black to blue to black front bezel. 10895 had the blue bezel but still had the thick metal name plate. It also had the Commodore tape drive by that point but a black label variation. http://vintagecomputer.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/PET-2001-8-10051-front.jpg On Thu, Nov 7, 2019 at 9:36 PM Mike Stein <mhs.stein_at_gmail.com> wrote: Odd; I always thought that they went from blue bezel (and white phosphor) to black (and green); maybe they went black to blue and back to black,,, ----- Original Message ----- From: Santo Nucifora To: cbm-hackers_at_musoftware.de Sent: Thursday, November 07, 2019 9:09 PM Subject: Re: hi res pic of 2001-8 power supply smoothing cap wiring All eight of my PET 2001-8s are different variations; some subtle, some major but they all have a chicklet keyboard and a tape drive (except for one that was modified to add an aftermarket keyboard but it's easily reversed). I need to take some better pics to highlight the differences. My earliest PET 2001-8 is serial number 10051 (number 51) and this unit is somewhat different from serial number 10171 which is not that far off. Differences include a solder maskless motherboard, a different early analog board in the monitor section and a folding "kickstand" in the earliest. The later one has the normal kickstand we all know and love and the normal early motherboard. From 10171 to 10895 PETs went from black bezel to blue somewhere in that range. Anyway, it is on my list to document each of them with pictures. They are definitely one of my personal favorites too. I would like to learn more detail about the pet model revs. I did not think I had an early 2001-8, but I'd like to get one some time just cause they're a personal fav.. I've only seen 4 or 5 wires. Mystery solved for me. The fourth black wire goes nowhere :) This is a PET 2001-8 Professional computer at serial 41072 which is pretty late, i think. http://vintagecomputer.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Pet-2001-PS-wiring-03.jpg It's pretty straight forward; the two brown wires (transformer terminals 4 & 6) are the 16V AC or so that go to J8 pins 1 and 5; terminal 5 (centre tap and ground) on the transformer goes to the negative cap terminal and from there to pin 3 and also optionally to chassis ground (all black). Pin 4 is rectified unfiltered 8V DC from the PC board and goes to the positive cap terminal and from there back to the board filtered on pin 2, both red. Accessory boards with on-board regulation often connect here. Note that the plug J8 can plug in either way. Keep the J8 pins clean; it is notorious for overheating and burning the pcb if it gets some oxidation etc. that increases contact resistance. m ----- Original Message ----- From: Santo Nucifora To: cbm-hackers_at_musoftware.de Sent: Thursday, November 07, 2019 4:50 PM Subject: Re: hi res pic of 2001-8 power supply smoothing cap wiring I checked 8 2001-8s from 10051 to 41072 from 4 wire in the earliest to 6 wires in the latest. Is it as simple as all of the red so on one side, black on the negative? I am looking through what I have for the schematics for this model, until then I am just guessing. It goes to the power socket under the transformer so I can't see where it goes but I would assume the negative terminal? What is your serial number range? The one I took pics of was 100895 so that one is kinda early.
