What's considered "the best" C64 hardware?

Several VIC-II revisions had features or bugs that made them better or worse than others.

The same for SID and other chips.

And then the same for the motherboard itself.

Then there are several things like hackability, repairability, reliability...

What would be the "best" hardware overall?
