That is actually what I did with my IEEE488 interface for the LPT port. It works as a floppy drive for my PETs (and my C64 with IEEE488 interface :-) It uses an "ATN trap" too, to handle the timing requirement (the IEEE488 has the same ATN thing) But the interface consists of several ICs, needs extra 5V etc (but works with old LPT interfaces) so it is not the easiest one to build...
