I think this is the main point: If we have the hazzle to build a non-trivial device (that is, anothing not like the X1541, XE1541, XM1541 and XA1541), then the time is best used for building something based on USB, Firewire, Ethernet, WLAN, Bluetooth, or even something exotic like WirelessHART if you like, instead of using the dying parallel port.
