Yea, I tried a continuity check on the AppleTalk cable, and about half 
the pins were properly paired end-to-end.  I didn't bother trying to 
find out how where the non-matched pins went, as the cable was suddenly 
so much shielded 8-conductor garbage wire to me after that.

The 1521 cable was, of course, "straight connected" as you put it .. all 
8 pins.

Ah well, sorry to waste yalls time on that.
