I don't have the PET memory map handy, or memorized, but the video RAM is small. If one location only is stuck with the PETSCII code for * in that memory location, the first thing that comes to my mind is a malfunction related to meet memory addressing. Look at the binary code for that screen RAM address location and determine if there is an address bit that could be corrupted in such a way that within the small range of addresses that one is the only location that could be mapped incorrectly to another location ( perhaps ROM ) that actually has the *. It would have to be a bit that, being corrupted, would not cause the same problem elsewhere on the screen.
