It's not a fantasy, it's a real thing you can buy. I've been supporting it's additional functionality in some of my (so far unreleased) software (80 column, color palette, cpu turbo). There are also attempts at running it on much cheaper fpga boards, so you can avoid the high price. But I'm sure there are many people who are not interested in it.
