IMHO you can use the same principle as a freezer: save all data regarding the CPU, VIC and whatever in this SRAM as well. The only extra hardware needed is the battery plus accompanying electronics and an EPROM to be placed in the free socket (U36 ??). This EPROM contains the actual LOAD and SAVE software. Just an idea.
